Gianni Martini is the President of Fratelli Martini, which as well as being one of Italy’s largest producers of wine, also owns and runs a number of small estates in his family’s home region of Piemonte.

One of these is the beautifully renovated farmstead of Lo Zoccolaio, situated to the south-east of the town of Barolo, and is home to Villa Lanata’s Borolo production.

Here, the vineyards slope to the south-west, perfect for ripening the Nebbiolo grapes, and the wine is aged; (the cellar-master is particularly fond of the barrel signed by Sophia Loren! )

This is a 'class act' of a single vineyard Barolo, being also one that is at altitude and therefore even finer and more elegant than one might otherwise expect.

This is intense, perfumed, floral with under-ripe cherry aromas. The palate shows typically dark fruits with savoury notes and minerally nuances on the long, lingering finish.

Very fine and rewarding Barolo indeed!
